Military service is a profound sacrifice. Throughout US history, service members have endured the physical and emotional toll of military duty. Many carry visible and invisible wounds – including post-traumatic stress, severe depression, and generalized anxiety – which, if left untreated, can lead to transitional challenges, substance abuse, and other serious concerns.

Treating military-related trauma can be complicated. As a combat veteran and licensed mental health professional, you’ll be met with understanding and appreciation. Remember: you are not alone. Together, we will explore and process the chaos of war and reintegration.

“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.”

Military & Veteran Therapy FAQs

What unique qualifications does Jeffrey Farber have for treating military personnel and veterans?

I am a combat veteran myself, along with a licensed mental health professional. I understand the unique concerns that come with clients in the military and fellow veterans. I also understand that every client comes with their own unique issues and will build a comprehensive treatment plan for you.

What types of military-related trauma do you treat?

In terms of military-related trauma, I treat PTSD, severe depression, transitional concerns, and generalized anxiety, among other mental health concerns like substance abuse.

What are "invisible wounds" and how are they treated?

“Invisible wounds” are emotional, cognitive, and mental injuries to the nervous system. Because they affect your mental health, they are often not visible to others around you. They are typically treated through therapy, support groups, and medication.

How does being a combat veteran inform your therapeutic approach?

Being a combat veteran means I come to each session with compassion, understanding, and appreciation for what you’ve been through. Unlike a provider who hasn’t been through the military and combat, I can meet you where you’re at and ensure you truly understand that you aren’t alone.

What is the reintegration process, and how does therapy help?

The reintegration process involves rebuilding connections and discovering how to function in society after leaving the military (or after any major separation). Because the process can often involve addressing past hurt, learning new skills, and establishing healthy routines, therapy can be incredibly helpful. I can help you throughout your reintegration process.

Do you work with active-duty service members or only veterans?

I work with both active-duty service members and veterans.

Can therapy help prevent substance abuse in veterans?

Yes. Whether you’re looking to prevent substance abuse as a veteran or treat a substance use disorder (or addiction), therapy can be highly beneficial. I can help you learn the thought patterns and behaviors that lead to substance abuse and give you healthy coping strategies to deal with life’s problems.

What is moral injury, and how is it different from PTSD?

A moral injury is distress from violating your own core moral beliefs. This can lead to guilt, shame, and feelings of betrayal. It’s different from PTSD because PTSD stems from fear and usually comes about because of a life-threatening event or trauma. They can go hand-in-hand, but they are two separate concerns.

How do you create understanding for military experiences that civilians might not grasp?

Because of my own military and combat experience, I am able to better understand my active-duty and veteran clients’ experiences and difficulties better than a civilian therapist might. I also bring empathy, compassion, and no judgment to every session, to ensure each and every client understands they aren’t alone.

What should I expect when discussing combat experiences in therapy?

Whether we are meeting virtually or in-person, I create a structured and safe environment to ensure you not only feel comfortable sharing but don’t feel judged as we discuss difficult and intense events and emotions.

What is Military and Veteran Therapy?

Military and veteran therapy is a specialized form of mental health care designed for active duty service members, veterans, and their family members and loved ones. It works to address unique challenges like combat trauma (PTSD), deployment stress, and difficulties transitioning from military life to civilian life through counseling and evidence-based therapies.

Because Jeff is a combat veteran, he is familiar with everything that comes with serving in the military and being a veteran. He brings a unique perspective to his military and veteran clients and will ensure you feel understood and not alone.

What Mental Health Concerns Can Military and Veteran Therapy Treat?

Military and veteran therapy can help address a wide range of mental health conditions and life struggles. This type of therapy and Jeff Farber’s expertise can help manage conditions military personnel struggle with, like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance use, focusing on readjustment, grief, and building coping skills for civilian life.
